AGU Publications

AGU publishes journals and books for the purpose of disseminating reports of original geophysical investigations to its membership and other individual researchers and students and, through libraries, to the scientific community and the public. It also publishes reviews of various geophysical fields and other information of interest to geophysical scientists.

In the publication of original work, the Union does not knowingly publish reports, letters, or articles that have been previously published or that contain mainly material that has been previously published.

Scientific results have come to be printed and distributed by such varied means that it has become necessary to define as accurately as possible what constitutes prior publication to the AGU. Issuance in a scientific journal, in a book offered for public distribution, in a serial issued by a commercial publishing company, or in a widely available governmental document are all regarded as publication. Reports distributed to very limited and defined distribution lists may not constitute publication. Preprints of papers and conference abstracts, such as those prepared for symposia and distributed to participants of the symposium are not regarded as published. Electronic posting of preprints to services that provide or purport to provide archiving and citability constitutes publication. If the preprint is removed from the archive, it is no longer considered published.

AGU expects authors to state the previous public exposure of the work described in their report when they submit it for publication. Original papers submitted to AGU are for publication exclusively by the Union.

Papers that appear in print with errors are considered published. Corrections to the paper are published as quickly as possible. In extreme cases, errors may necessitate the reprinting of an entire paper.
