In 2002 the electronic article became the version of record for AGU journals. Therefore an article becomes part of the permanent record when it is published online, and it must be preserved in this original format. In order to protect the integrity of the journal literature, it is essential to have a clear record of any changes to the content of published files.
The guiding principles of the AGU electronic corrections policy include the following:
- The original version of an article will remain available to readers. When a modification to the content of a published article is necessary, a formal "Correction to" article will be generated for the electronic and print formats as well as the permanent archive.
- All content-related modifications to a published article require notification that a correction has been made. Format corrections, such as replacing a fuzzy image, correcting corrupted figure labeling, and similar changes not involving intellectual content, can be made without formal notification.
- Formal corrections will be linked to the original article through a labeled button in the navigation bar of the Web display (HTML). In the online PDF version of the original article, notification will be provided through placement of a "corrected date" note at the top of the file. If there is sufficient time before a print issue is assembled at the end of a calendar month, the correction for the printed issue will be placed immediately behind the original article; if there is not sufficient time to process the correction article, a note "[Correction in process]" will be added at the end of the article entry in the table of contents.
