About Auxiliary Material and Electronic Data Supplements

Since 1994, AGU has accepted electronic data supplements (also called “datasets” or “auxiliary materials”) with the published articles. These supplements may be in the form of data tables, textual matter, figures, videos, or software applications. Prior to 1994, supplements were accepted in hard copy, microfiche, or VHS videocassette format, and these older supplements are being transferred to the appropriate electronic format and added to the online archive.

A limited number of file formats are allowed for these supplements, in order to provide wide usability across different platforms, and to enable AGU to archive the data for the indefinite future.

Supplements are considered an equal and integral component of the published article, and as such are subject to peer review. The primary purpose of the supplements is to make the information freely available to interested researchers worldwide. Some examples of supplements might be the supporting data table behind a figure, or an animation of a geophysical process over a period of time.

Here you will find current information about the accepted formats for the different kinds of supplements, and submission instructions.

You can also browse search the collection of online supplements and link to and download any resulting supplements of interest. Supplements are cited in the published article in a footnote providing the Web/ftp address of the archive; they are listed by paper number. Online articles include links from the table of contents to the data supplement.
