Two major field experiments, the First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project Regional Experiment (FIRE, summer 1987) and the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment (ASTEX summer 1992), were aimed at studying the marine stratus regime, focusing on cloud transition from stratus to cumulus. A special issue of the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences dedicated to ASTEX will appear in the near future.
