Summary

Remote sensing has always been a fundamental tool of science. The development of the space program has greatly accelerated the invention of sensors for spacecraft and Earth-based telescopes to bring distant objects into our ``laboratories.'' Even if space exploration is going into a temporary lull, astronomers will continue to make do with what they can invent in order to attack the major questions of their era.
