Public Affairs, as part of the Strategic Communications and Outreach department at AGU, is hosting events at the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco from 14–18 December. You can learn how to become more politically involved, how to communicate with legislators, and learn about AGU's Congressional Science Fellowship program. Communicating with Congress Workshop
Sharing your scientific expertise and your latest research with legislators can inform and shape public policy. Learn how to get politically involved at a local and national level and how to speak with your elected representatives about science. This hands-on workshop will provide you with tips and techniques for speaking effectively about science to policymakers. Lunch will be served, but space is limited. No advanced registration is required.
When: Monday, 14 December, 2009 (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM)

Congressional Science Fellowship Luncheon
Learn about AGU's successful Congressional Science Fellowship program and Mass Media Fellowship program. Current and former Congressional fellows will discuss their experiences and how they helped to influence national science, energy, and environmental policy. Past media fellows will share stories about reporting on science news for major publications and broadcast outlets. Past fellows have found these programs positively influence their lives and careers. Lunch will be served, but space is limited. No advanced registration is required.

Oral Session
Providing Climate Policymakers with a Strong Scientific Base (PA24A)
Topics include the role of the National Academy of Sciences in supporting climate decision makers, changes in the perceived risk of climate change due to evidence from sudden climatic events, and the perspective of a young scientist on Capitol Hill from Maggie Walser, AGU's 2008–2009 Congressional Science Fellow.

Poster Sessions
(A) Public Affairs General Contribution Posters (PA21A) AND (B) Relationship of Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards to National and Global Security Posters (PA21B)
General posters will cover areas such as the development of an earthquake impact scale, carbon trading, and natural hazard public policy. Hazards such as groundwater depletion and resulting long-term food scarcity, volcanic ash, and mineral supply risk will also be presented.
