Recap of Public Affairs at AGU Meeting in San Francisco
30 December 2009
ASLA 09-26
This year's AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco brought together over 16,000 Earth and space scientists to disseminate and share their latest research. Many of these scientists also expressed an interest in becoming involved in the legislative process, whether it be at the local, state, or federal level, signaling that AGU members are concerned with the public policy outcomes of their science.
The Public Affairs department hosted two luncheons during the Fall Meeting. The first luncheon was a workshop, entitled Communicating with Congress, and guest speaker Susan Joy Hassol discussed the specifics of communicating science. The luncheon also highlighted AGU's Congressional Visits Days on 28–29 April and 21–22 September 2010. The second luncheon was an informational session about AGU's Congressional Science Fellowship, where Fellows spend one year on Capitol Hill as a staff member in the office of a Member of Congress or a Congressional Committee. Applications for the 2010–2011 Fellowship are open now through 1 February 2010.
On hand at the two luncheons was Julie Stuart of Making Ideas Visible who drew up comprehensive visual representations of the discussions. If you missed the luncheons, Julie's illustrative overviews are a great way to get a recap.
