Fiscal Year 11 CR—Summary of Cuts

Last week, President Obama, House Speaker Boehner, and Senate Majority Leader Reid agreed to a last minute deal to stave off a government shutdown. The deal consisted of two parts:
- A one-week extension of the continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through Friday, 15 April, containing $2 billion in cuts, most drawn from transportation and housing programs (read the House Appropriations Committee press release); and,
- A CR to fund the government through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11), which ends 30 September 2011. Yesterday, the Senate and House Appropriations Committees released details of that CR, which includes significant cuts to several Earth and space science related federal agencies.

Note: The bill prohibits the use of NOAA funds to establish a Climate Service; this prohibition stays in effect until 30 September 2011. Furthermore, NOAA & NASA’s Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) also did not receive the additional funding it needs to launch on time. As a result, there is a projected data gap in 2017.
