Bright Students Training as Research Scientists (Bright STaRS)
High school students participating in after-school and summer research experiences in the Earth and space sciences are invited to participate in the AGU Bright STaRS program. The Bright STaRS program provides a dedicated forum for ~50 students to present their own research results to the scientific community and learn about exciting research, education, and career opportunities in the geosciences. This FREE program is held in conjunction with the AGU Fall Annual Meeting, which is attended by over 14,000 Earth and space scientists from around the globe.
Key components of the Bright STaRS program include:
- publication of the students’ research abstract in the Fall AGU Meeting abstract volume and program
- presentation of the students’ research in a dedicated afternoon poster session in the Fall AGU Meeting exhibit hall
- complimentary meeting badge to attend technical sessions and exhibits of the Fall AGU Meeting
- access to the Academic Showcase, which offers information on 30 institutions offering geoscience undergraduate and graduate degree programs
- a special morning symposium with presentations by 4 leading scientists describing new research directions in the Earth and space sciences
- luncheon with scientists and symposium speakers
Recent participants in the Bright STaRS program have included students involved with the San Francisco State University SF ROCKS! Program, the Lawrence Hall of Science Geoscience Interns program, the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association, the California Academy of Sciences, the Greater Richmond Area Higher Education Consortium, and the Gallaudet University Model Secondary School for the Deaf.
Students and program advisors who are interested in this program MUST contact Dr. Inés Cifuentes (contact details at top of page). Participating students will be required to submit at least one abstract (this can be a group abstract) by the Fall meeting abstract deadline. No late abstracts will be allowed.
