New press officer at AGU


WASHINGTON—AGU is pleased to announce that Maria-José Viñas has joined the society's staff as Public Information Coordinator. She will work with Peter Weiss, AGU's Public Information Manager, to disseminate findings presented in AGU journals and meetings to the public, primarily through the mass media.

Maria-José comes to AGU with a broad background in science, journalism, and public information. She trained and worked as a veterinarian in Spain, her home country, and in France. After returning to school to obtain a graduate degree in journalism, she was head of communications for the Veterinary Association of Barcelona and an economic journalist for the Catalan News Agency.

In June 2008, Maria-José graduated from the science writing program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has worked as an intern at Stanford News Service, SETI Radio, and other media outlets, and has freelanced science articles to Spanish newspapers, including El País and Público, both based in Madrid. Just prior to coming to AGU, Maria-José covered science and technology as an intern for The Chronicle of Higher Education. She is fluent in English, Spanish and Catalan.
