Science writers are urged to register now for 2001 Spring Meeting, which will take place at Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts, from Tuesday, May 29, through Saturday, June 2. This meeting brings together the American Geophysical Union, the Space Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society, the Geochemical Society, and the Mineralogical Society of America for reports on the latest advances in earth and space science.
We anticipate around 140 special sessions in all of the earth and space sciences. The planned special sessions are listed and described, subject to modification, on the AGU web site: http://www.agu.org/meetings/sm01spss.html.
Over 2,600 abstracts were received for this meeting. They will be organized into sessions by the Spring Meeting Program Committee in early April, and we anticipate that they will be available online in fully searchable form (by topic, session, author, institution, etc.) by mid-April. A subsequent media advisory will provide information on searching abstracts.
This year, the abstracts will be available both as a bound volume (approximately 500 pages) or as a fully searchable CD-ROM. Both versions will be available in mid-May. Press registrants may receive either version (but only one) in advance of the meeting. Copies in both formats will be available in the Press Room.
As usual, we will organize press conferences on some of the major developments reported at the meeting. The preliminary announcement of press conferences will be sent in late April, with the "final" (i.e., subject to late changes) version sent in mid-May.
A Press Room and a Briefing Room will be available. A subsequent advisory will provide room numbers for these facilities and phone and fax numbers for the Press Room.
Press Room hours of operation:
May 29-June 2: 7:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
The Press Room will be equipped with telephones (no charge for business calls), fax machine, copier, and computer with Internet access. Press releases relevant to the meeting will be available, as will a message board. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided daily.
The Briefing Room will be the site of press conferences and can also be used for individual interviews and live feeds.
AGU has secured blocks of rooms at preferential rates in seven hotels near the Hynes Convention Center. Rates for singles range from $126 to $159, plus tax. For a list of these hotels, their addresses, and rates, see the AGU web site:
http://agu.org/meetings/sm01_hr.html#Hotel.
You may book a room online for any listed hotel:
http://www.pkghlrss.com/events/agu/agu.html.
Special meeting rates are guaranteed only through April 30, but some hotels may sell out prior to that date. You are urged to make early reservations.
Press registrants receive a badge that provides access to any of the scientific sessions of the meeting, the exhibition hall, and the Press Room and Briefing Room. No one will be admitted without a valid badge. A press registration form will be found at the end of this message. You are encouraged to register in advance, to avoid delay at the meeting. If you prefer to register on site, go directly to the Press Room, not the main registration windows.
Eligibility for press registration is limited to the following persons:
Note: Representatives of publishing houses, for-profit corporations, and the business side of news media must pre-register through the AGU web site or at the main registration desk at the meeting and pay the appropriate fees.
