Venue: The 2001 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union takes place Monday through Friday, December 10 to 14, at the Moscone Convention Center, 747 Howard Street, San Francisco, California 94103.
Pre-registration: As usual, we expect over 8,000 scientists to participate, along with more than 100 science writers and public information officers. Media representatives and PIOs are encouraged to register in advance, using the form at the end of this message. Those who do will avoid waiting on line to receive press credentials at the meeting.
You may also register onsite in the Press Room (not at the main registration windows). Please see Part 7 below for eligibility requirements.
Abstracts: Press pre-registrants will also receive, while supplies last, the Abstract volume in book or CD-ROM form by mail or express service. This will help you plan ahead to navigate through the estimated 7,000 oral and poster presentations in the 267 planned sessions at the meeting. Others will receive their copy of the Abstracts, along with the Program Book, upon check-in at the Press Room, where on-site press registration is also possible. Note: the Abstract book and CD-ROM will be available in November. Abstracts will also be viewable on the AGU web site; subsequent advisories will provide the URL, once it is established. For the present, you may review the list of planned special sessions at http://submissions6.agu.org/meetings_database/fm01sessions_search.asp.
In addition to saving and reviewing this advisory, please consult the AGU web site for general information about the meeting and San Francisco:
http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm01top.html.
This site will be frequently updated.
AGU has negotiated special rates at 15 San Francisco hotels for those attending Fall Meeting, including press. Rates for singles vary from $84 to $147 per night, plus 14% state and local taxes. (You are not obligated to pay any surcharges that may inadvertently appear on your bill.)
The list of meeting hotels, their facilities and rates, and a map, may be seen at https://www.cmrus.com/agu_5u/welcome.asp
The distance of these hotels from the Moscone Center ranges from one block to two miles; free shuttle service is provided for all but one nearby hotel. You are urged to book your hotel room early in order to secure the location or price range you prefer. Changes or cancellations may be made without charge up to 72 hours in advance of your planned arrival. The deadline for registration at meeting rates is November 9.
To receive the specially negotiated AGU Fall Meeting rates, you may book a hotel room in one of the following ways only:
United Airlines is offering Fall Meeting attendees 10% or 15% discounts off their lowest published fares for tickets purchased at least 60 days in advance, and 5% or 10% after that. To receive these rates, you must call United Convention sales at 1-800-521-4041, giving Meeting ID # 549TP.
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) is a society of over 39,000 members in 115 countries with the purpose of advancing progress in the earth, atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic, space, and planetary sciences. AGU is dedicated to fostering high-quality scientific research, disseminating the results of that research both to the scientific community and the general public, enhancing educational opportunities in science, and encouraging international cooperation in geophysics.
A Press Room and Briefing Room will be available. A subsequent advisory will provide room numbers for these facilities and phone and fax numbers for the Press Room.
Press Room hours of operation:
December 10-14: 7:30 a.m. to at least 5:00 p.m., PST (1530-0100 UCT), daily
Press Room facilities:
The Briefing Room will be the site of press conferences and can be used at other times for individual interviews and live feeds. A mult box for recording sound from the head table microphones will be located at the rear of the room. Press conferences pertaining to newsworthy sessions will be developed and will be the subject of subsequent advisories, starting in October.
We have organized an all-day press field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Sunday, December 9. It will include a behind the scenes tour of this spectacular facility, accompanied by briefings on current projects by scientists from MBA and its sister institution, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Participation will be limited to one busload, departing from the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco at 9:00 a.m. and returning in the evening. You may express your interest in participating in this field trip on the Press Registration Form.
If you do not live in the Bay Area, plan on arriving in San Francisco on Saturday, December 8, to participate in this trip. For most travelers, the lower airfare will more than offset the extra night's lodging.
Plans are tentative at this point; watch for updated details in subsequent advisories.
AGU's annual journalism awards will be presented during Honors Evening at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, December 12. The winners, as announced earlier this year, are Richard Stone for a freelance article in Smithsonian magazine on Lake Vostok and Glennda Chui for a story in the San Jose Mercury News on the most acidic water ever found in nature.
The award ceremony and ensuing reception are open to all meeting registrants, including press.
Press registrants receive a badge that provides access to any of the scientific sessions of the meeting, as well as to the Press Room and Briefing Room. No one will be admitted without a valid badge. A press registration form will be found at the end of this message.
Eligibility for press registration is limited to the following persons:
Note: Representatives of publishing houses, for-profit corporations, and the business side of news media must pre-register through the AGU web site or register at the main registration desk at the meeting and pay the appropriate fees.
The press pre-registration deadline is Friday, November 30, 2001. The form must be received at AGU by that date for your badge to be available upon arrival, avoiding delay. You may, of course, also register in the Press Room. Once the Abstracts are available in CD-ROM and/or book form, and while supplies last, they will be sent to registrants, upon request from the form below. (Others will receive a copy in the Press Room.)
If you prefer, you may access a printable form. This form may be sent by fax to Harvey Leifert at +1 (202) 328-0566, or it may be mailed to
