AGU: A Community of 50,000+ Earth Scientists

The American Geophysical Union (AGU):

Started in 1919 by the American Research Council, the AGU is now more than 50,000 members strong, and represents Earth Scientists from more than 100 countries. We are a non-profit corporation dedicated to the furtherance of the geophysical sciences in both the scientific and social arenas.

Why join the AGU?

Through multiple venues, such as Meetings, peer-reviewed Journals and EOS, our widely distributed newsletter, AGU provides a format to communicate scientific results, discuss current trends in education and policy, learn about funding opportunities and interact with policymakers. AGU Membership Fees are kept low, and our focus is on inclusion; as the Earth Sciences has become more integrative, so has our membership diversified!

What are AGU Sections?

The AGU provides 11 Sections within which members can identify, creating small and friendly communities of similarly focused interests. Sections also award Fellowship into the Union, and organize Award nominations. In addition, members can become Officers through their Section, and promote leadership within AGU.

Why Identify with the AGU Biogeosciences Section?

As the youngest AGU section, Biogeosciences is also the fastest growing and most active section. We welcome scientists traditionally defined within Biology, Ecology, Soil Science, Meteorology, etc., who find themselves interested in Earth Science questions, and who wish to interface with the Earth Science community at large. We are also at the forefront of defining the newest Earth Science problems through new Journals and Meeting Sessions, in the integrative arena of interactions between living organisms and their environments .
