AGU Biogeosciences Section Newsletter
31 May 2005

Dear AGU Biogeosciences Section members,
Below is a summary of recent activities in our section, some plans/future directions, and, above all, some specific requests for your involvement. We hope your summer is productive and enjoyable!

Rob Jackson (B Section President; mailto:jackson@duke.edu)
Mary Voytek (B Section Secretary; mavoytek@usgs.gov)

Spring Meeting 2005
The Biogeosciences section and AGU in general just completed a successful spring meeting in New Orleans held jointly with four societies: AGU, NABS, SEG, and SPD/AAS. Thanks to all of you who participated and to B member Aaron Packman for organizing the B sessions at New Orleans.

Biogeosciences Membership
Our section continues to grow rapidly. As of April 2005, we have 1,764 primary members and 3,139 secondary members, ~5,000 AGU members affiliated with B! Encourage your students and colleagues to join.

JGR-Biogeosciences
The new JGR-Biogeosciences section began accepting papers January 1st, 2005. There were ~55 submissions by May, and ~10 papers have already passed through the review process. Thanks to Diane McKnight, the editor in chief, and her editorial board for their work. Keep the submissions coming!

Biogeosciences Fellows
Congratulations to the six new AGU fellows sponsored or co-sponsored by B and honored in New Orleans: Ralf Conrad, Seth Krishnaswami, Devendra Lal, Francois Morel, Everett Shock, and Sue Trumbore. Thanks also to President-elect Bill Reeburgh for coordinating our fellows and honors nominations.

Student Awards and Blackwell Sponsorship
Congratulations as well to our ten best paper/poster student winners from the Fall 2004 meeting: Steve Allison, Sheri L Conner-Gausepohl, Brent Dalzell, Darren Drewry, Karl Garman, Holly Gibbs, Diana Hsueh, Susan Mau, Nicole Nowinski, and Qingyuan Zhang. Thanks to B member Dev Niyogi for coordinating the student judging in San Francisco. Thanks also to Blackwell Publishing for graciously donating $1000 to the section in 2004 to sponsor student awards. That sponsorship will continue in 2005.

Slate of Candidates for B Elections
Elections for the next set of B officers will be held by AGU this fall. Our two candidates for President are Dork Sahagian of Lehigh and Bill Schlesinger of Duke. Kathy Hibbard and Michael Keller are running for Secretary. Thanks to all four for their willingness to serve the section.

Call for 2005 Fall B Sessions
This is a call for session proposals in Biogeosciences for the Fall 2005 meeting. Session proposals are due 10 June 2005, and should be submitted online to the AGU website http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm05/. Guidelines and proposal requirements are available online. You must provide a brief (1 or 2 paragraphs) description of the proposed session. Include potential invited speakers since firm commitments are not required at this time. You will be asked to identify two session conveners with complete contact information, if the proposal is approved. Comments and questions should be directed to Dave Valentine (valentine@geol.ucsb.edu) or Chris Still (still@icess.ucsb.edu).

Section Needs - Student/Postdoc Involvement
The B section would benefit greatly from more student and postdoc involvement and ideas. One way to do this is to have formal student B representatives. Hence, we're seeking two student members to act as liaisons in our section. In return for gathering ideas and attending the Executive Committee meetings, we're offering free AGU registration for each to one AGU meeting a year. Please volunteer or volunteer someone else.
We also need a new section webmaster. Whoever volunteers for this job, coordinating the site hosted by AGU, will also receive free registration to an AGU annual meeting once a year. Please email if you're interested.

Thanks for everyone's involvement, and keep the ideas coming.
