Statement from Peter Schlosser

Dear members of the AGU Ocean Sciences section,

It is my great pleasure to announce the 2011/2012 Ocean Sciences
section Awardees and named Lecturers:

The recipient of the Ocean Sciences Award is Jim Swift, Scripps
Institution of Oceanography, for 'selfless service to the ocean
sciences community around the world, a service remarkable for its
quality, breadth, duration, and influence'.

The two recipients of the Ocean Sciences Early Career Award are:

Josh Willis, Jet Propulsion Lab, California Institute of Technology,
for his 'pioneering contributions integrating global satellite and in
situ ocean data for understanding climate variability and change, as
well as for his leadership in the satellite altimetry community.'

Baylor Fox-Kemper, University of Colorado, Boulder, for his
'fundamental contributions to understanding the oceanic general
circulation, the dynamical nature of the eddy-filled oceanic mixed
layer, and their connection to climate modeling'.

The Sverdrup Lecture will be delivered by Deborah Steinberg, Virginia
Institute of Marine Science.

The Rachel Carson Lecture will be presented by Nancy Rabalais,
Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium.

Presentation of the Ocean Sciences Award and the Ocean Sciences Early
Career awards will take place during the AGU Fall meeting as part of
the Ocean Sciences section luncheon.

The Sverdrup and Carson lectures will be delivered during the 2012
Ocean Sciences meeting in Salt Lake City.

Please join me in congratulating our Ocean Sciences Awardees and Lecturers.

Peter Schlosser

President, AGU Ocean Sciences section
