2011 Ocean Sciences Awards and Lectures: Call for Nominations
Dear members of the AGU Ocean Sciences section,
The Ocean Sciences section of the American Geophysical Union is seeking
nominations for the following awards and lectures:
- Ocean Sciences
Award
- Early Career
Award
- Rachel Carson
Lecture, and
- Sverdrup Lecture
The Ocean Sciences Award and Early Career Award for 2011 will be
presented during the Fall AGU meeting, December 5-9, 2011, in San
Francisco.
The Sverdrup Lecture and Rachel Carson Lecture will be given at the
Ocean Sciences meeting, 20-24 February, 2012, in Salt Lake City.
The
Early Career Award is given to a member of the Ocean Sciences Section
in recognition of significant contributions to and promise in the ocean
sciences. The awardee must be in the first eight post-doctoral degree
years of their career. One award will be given at the Fall Meeting
every other year, beginning in 2002. The award will include a grant for
travel to AGU meetings funded by the contributions of members of the
Ocean Sciences Section. A list of past awardees can be found at the Ocean Sciences Honors page.
Established
in 1982, the Ocean Sciences Award is presented for outstanding and
long-standing service to the ocean sciences. AGU has a list of previous awardees.
The Rachel Carson Lecture honors the life and work of Rachel Carson.
The person chosen to present the lecture exemplifies Rachel
Carson's work with cutting-edge ocean science, especially science
relevant to societal concerns. You can find a list of previous Carson lecturers at the Ocean Sciences Honors page.
The Sverdrup Lecture honors the life and work of Harald Sverdrup. A list of previous Sverdrup lecturers can be found at the Ocean Sciences Honors page.
Nominations for the Ocean Sciences and Early Career Awards should
include:
- Nomination letter
- CV and publication list of nominee
- One seconding letter of the nomination
Nominations for the Sverdrup and Carson Lectures should include:
- Nomination letter
- CV and publication list of nominee
Nominations should be sent in electronic form (preferred format: pdf
file) to John
Farrington (jfarrington@whoi.edu), Chair of the Ocean
Sciences honors and recognition committee.
The deadline for the
nominations is June 1, 2011.
