About the Planetary Sciences Section

The Planetary Sciences section was established in 1962. The section is served by a President, President-Elect and Secretary each with a 2-year term and elected by the membership. Transfer of office occurs in summer of even numbered years.

Officers for 2006-2008 are: Tilman Spohn, DLR (Pres); Bruce Jakosky, Univ. Colorado (Pres.-Elect) and Jim Zimbelman, Smithsonian (Sect). The AGU maintains websites with a list of >Past Presidents and >Past Secretaries for the section.

As of October 2005 the section has 1682 members with Planetary Science as their primary affiliation, 3663 members with Planetary as a secondary affiliation, and 322 student members. One indicator of section interest and participation is the submission of abstracts to the annual spring and fall meetings. The Spring meeting shows even submissions, while the Fall meeting continues to grow. Spring 2003 was a non-AGU meeting so submission statistics were not obtained.
