AGU Board of Directors

Director II

Professor, National Space Research and Development Agency, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nigeria

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I look forward to bringing in the leadership experience that is rich in African perspectives typical of developing nations where prevailing conditions and policies pose great challenges to development of science. I have served as the first elected President of the African Geophysical Society (2012-2016) and led a couple of scientific cooperations across the African region. I had served on AGU’s Global Engagement Committee and the Space Physics and Aeronomy Basu U.S. Early Career Award Committee. I served also on the United Nations New Experts group on Space Weather and some other international professional bodies. Since 2019, I serve as the convener of annual series of International Colloquium on Equatorial and Low-Latitude Ionosphere held in Nigeria. I also serve as a regular member of the International Scientific Organising Committees of several international conferences in many countries. I am involved in a number of scientific bodies such as the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) and hope to bring my diverse experience to bear.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

AGU - Global Engagement Committee; United Nations International Space Weather Initiative – International Steering Committee; AGU - Space Physics and Aeronomy Basu U.S. Early Career Award Committee; United Nations International Heliophysical Year National Coordinator; United Nations - New Expert group on Space Weather; President, African Geophysical Society (2012-2014); Review of Academic and Professional Journals; National Adherent Representative – Scientific Committee for Solar Terrestrial Physics; Convener of series of International Colloquium on Equatorial and Low-Latitude Ionosphere

The AGU strategic plan presents a bold and visionary direction for the organization. Board members must work together with each other, other volunteer leaders, and staff to play a key role in implementing the plan. What are the key features of the strategic plan that you find most exciting? What features do you think will be most challenging? As a Board member how would you partner with others to implement the strategic plan?

There is no feature of the strategic goal that is more challenging than others. Every aspect of the strategic plan is richly conceived, measurable, and achievable. I am excited with the manner with which the strategic plan has infused science and partnership with great values such as excellence, etc. I shall bring my managerial experience to bear in ensuring preservation of those great values of AGU.

I will work in unity of purpose with other team members and ensure cooperation towards implementation of the strategic plan. I shall moderate and modulate decision-making procedures and ensure great team work in every delivery.

I shall work with the other board members to ensure that policies and activities geared towards the actualization of the goals in sustainable manners are upheld and executed.
1. Catalyze discovery and solutions to scientific and societal challenges: I shall promote ideas and policies that can facilitate the discovery and solutions to scientific and societal challenges.

2. Promote and exemplify an inclusive scientific culture: I shall ensure that ideas of everyone seeking to contribute to the growth of AGU count. AGU shall take advantage of existing diversity in operating an inclusive governance system that is blended with equity.

3. Partner broadly with other organizations and sectors to address scientific and societal challenges: I shall work with other members to make our partnership broader, more collaborative, sustainable, and effective. Effort shall be made to develop new partnerships, facilitate science education, outreach, and engagement at global levels.
