Embedding Scientists in Media
The Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellows program is a 10-week summer program that places science, engineering, and mathematics students at media organizations nationwide. Fellows use their academic training as they research, write, and report today’s headlines, sharpening their skills in communicating complex scientific issues to the public.
The Mass Media Fellowship program and applications are administered and managed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). AGU sponsors one fellow per year.
Successful applicants are required to attend an orientation at AAAS headquarters in early June and a wrap-up session in mid-August.

Recipients receive the following:
- An $8,000 stipend
- Funds for traveling to and from AAAS for fellowship-related activities, and to and from their placement sites
Note: The fellowship does not include housing or a housing stipend.
Eligibility
Applicant
Applicants must be:
- US citizens or hold visas that allow them to receive payment for work during the summer. AAAS cannot assist in obtaining/retaining visas.
- enrolled as an upper level undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral student or be within one year of completion;
- in the life, physical, health, engineering, computer, social sciences, mathematics or related fields.
Note: Students enrolled in English, journalism, or other non-technical fields are not eligible for the AAAS Mass Media Fellowship but may be eligible for the Diverse Voices in Science Journalism Internship.
