What: As part of AGI's Earth Science Week (13-19 October), the Sharing Science Program will host science communicator Maryam Zaringhalam, Ph.D. and WikimediaDC to lead a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon. The event will help edit and fix gaps in publicly available scientific information. The theme of Earth Science Week is "Geoscience is for Everyone."

Our main goals are to:

• Ensure accurate and robust information on Wikipedia pages for individuals traditionally underrepresented in science;
• Teach scientists how to use Wikipedia as a science communication outlet for issues surrounding science and society; and
• Support AGU's dedication to promoting participation of international audiences.

Details: This is a hands-on workshop that will include training, light snacks, and time to work on editing Wikipedia pages. Laptops are required; please bring your own.

Remotely: Can't participate in person? Make a pledge to contribute remotely. The instruction portion of the event will be live-casted and all contributions will be tracked, so it doesn't matter where the editor lives. Whether you're down the block, or somewhere on the other side of the world, you can take part in this effort to change the landscape of science and scientists on Wikipedia.

Maryam is a Data Science and Open Science Specialist at the National Library of Medicine’s Office of Strategic Initiatives, part of the 500 Women Scientist leadership team, and has created and edited over 150 Wikipedia pages and hosted numerous edit-a-thons.
