SCIWS6 Using and Uploading Data to the Magnetics Information Consortium (MagIC) Data Repository
Workshop
In this workshop we will give a short overview of the functionality of the MagIC website (https://earthref.org/MagIC) and the 3.0 data model. We will then demonstrate the online upload system that now has many interactive features to ease the mapping of legacy data sets to the MagIC data model. This system is designed for uploading the summary tables of data found in past journal articles or unpublished legacy data. The next workflow we will demonstrate is how to import your measurement level data into the PmagPy software for analysis. We will be using Pmag GUI to import the data and then the Demag GUI tool to demonstrate how to make fits to demagnetization data. The data can then be exported for easy upload to MagIC and data publication. Finally, we will have an open discussion on the data types that people are using and which import modules we are missing to make PmagPy useful to a wider audience. Going forward, journals are generally requiring authors to archive all their data in a findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) compliant data repository. MagIC strives to meet still evolving FAIR standards and is an officially approved repository for AGU and Nature journals and accepted by others.
