U21C - Plenary I: Current Problems Facing Our Planet and Society
Lecture Instructional

During AGU’s first century, human activities and infrastructure have transformed the surface of our planet and even the composition of the atmosphere. These changes in turn are altering the threats posed by natural processes to human and other living communities, through complex and global connections that scientists seek to understand and predict. For example, interactions between the atmosphere, ocean, and ice sheets are essential for understanding the future rate of sea level rise, a topic of urgency and salience for coastal communities worldwide. This session will touch on some of these connections between the changing planet and society.
