Webinar
Geodesy underpins fundamental science of the shape and gravity of the Earth and planets and their time variations with numerous applications where precise positioning is needed: satellites, autonomous navigation, precision agriculture, smart phones, shipping, aviation, military, etc. Within the USA and selected other countries, we are hearing reports that employers cannot find adequately trained students in geodesy. Some have even called it a crisis. During this webinar, a panel of experts will discuss the skills needed for a geodetically trained workforce, the current state of the workforce, and creative solutions to attracting a 21st century workforce for geodesy. Approaches include but are not limited to: focus on K-12 education, internship programs, cross-institutional online graduate training courses, and recruiting majors and/or experienced workers from other STEM fields to geodesy.
Panelists:
- Rick Bennett, National Geodetic Survey
- Donna Charlevoix, EarthScope
- John Galetzka, National Geodetic Survey
- Michael Hubenthal, EarthScope
- Nikki Markiel, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
- Jeremy Maurer, Missouri University of Science and Technology
