Earth, environmental, and space science (EESS) is evolving rapidly. We are observing Earth, the solar system, and space at all scales. Environmental sensors and satellites are producing data at both global and fine scales. These data and science have huge societal impacts that will grow going forward as a growing populations tax Earth’s resources and chemical cycles and anthropogenic climate change proceeds. Consequently, changes are needed in the practice of science and the workforce. Career advancement, incentives, and rewards are not well aligned with these needs. Diversity is lagging, as is participation in and awareness of EESS in critical world regions. EESS depends on growing international teams and collaboration, and open, interoperable data, and both are threatened by growing nationalism. This session will explore the future of our science—the major scientific challenges, the growing connections with society, and what workforce is needed to engage these in the future.
