Postdoc Scholar in Physical Oceanography
The University of California, Santa Cruz, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service, seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar in Physical Oceanography to work on improving understanding of California Current System dynamics across timescales including historical analyses, seasonal forecasts, and long-term projections. The candidate will work with global climate and earth system models, regional ocean models, and observational datasets. Specific research areas include (but are not limited to) marine ecosystem predictability, drivers of long-term change in global climate and regional ocean models, responses of the coastal ocean to climate variability, and impacts of ocean variability and change on the chemistry and biology of the CCS from phytoplankton to top predators. These efforts are part of broader interdisciplinary projects aimed at developing improved fisheries management strategies for the California Current System. The position will be based at the NOAA/SWFSC laboratory in Monterey, California.

Postdoctoral Research Associate
The British Antarctic Survey is inviting applications for an experienced and independent observational physical oceanographer with an excellent academic profile. This will include a strong mathematical background and a track record of interpreting and analysing observational polar oceanographic datasets. Direct experience with ocean glider data and analysis of Southern Ocean or Weddell Sea observations would be considered a significant advantage. This is a 36 month full-time position for a suitably qualified postdoctoral researcher, working on two projects that are understanding the role of the Southern Ocean and Weddell Gyre in heat and carbon subduction. Specifically, the PDRA will contribute to the European Research Council (ERC)-funded project SO-CHIC (Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funded project ORCHESTRA (Ocean Regulation of Climate by Heat and Carbon sequestration and Transports).

This research is conducted using direct observations, proxies and numerical models to constrain carbon budget terms and their variability.

Postdoc in Algal-bacterial interactions
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to work on the interactions between heterotrophic bacteria and cyanobacteria to understand fundamental elemental cycling in aquatic environments and how these affect algal toxin production. This research will examine bacteria-controlled metabolic changes in cyanobacterial physiology using ‘omics, stable isotope imaging, and microbial community characterization. The project supports a multi-institution research program focused on understanding the abiotic and biotic controls on algal toxin production in aquatic ecosystems, specifically focused on cyanotoxins in freshwater for the current project. The postdoc will work with Xavier Mayali at LLNL and will be a member of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division. The research will take advantage of our team’s many analytical tools, including LLNL’s NanoSIMS imaging mass spectrometer, NMR facility, and accelerator mass spectrometer.

The Ocean Modeling group in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan is searching for a postdoctoral research fellow to analyze global models of internal waves for applications to ocean mixing and ocean acoustics. The project is funded for three years and is part of a multi-institution Office of Naval Research (ONR) Task Force Ocean (TFO) grant “Modeling, characterizing, and predicting effects of internal gravity waves on acoustic propagation on basin to global scales”. The Michigan TFO grant is in collaboration with complementary grants at Florida State University (FSU), University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Applied Ocean Sciences (AOS), and Applied Research in Acoustics LLC (ARiA). Our TFO project is one of many TFO projects funded across many academic, governmental, and private institutions.

The EU-funded project JERICO-S3 (European Research Infrastructure of Coastal Observatories: Science, Service, Sustainability) aims at the harmonization and further development of different monitoring platforms, and at improving the understanding of marine biogeochemical processes along European Coasts. JERICO-S3 aims to bring the existing JERICO-Research Infrastructure to the next level of integration to be of relevance for society at large. The overarching target of JERICO-S3 is to provide researchers with continuous and more valuable coastal data and datasets coupling physical and biological information, as well as extending the cooperation with Marine Infrastructures within and outside Europe (e.g., ARGO, EMSO). Postdoc Scholar for Marine Biogeochemistry
JISAO has an outstanding opportunity for a Postdoctoral Scholar in marine biogeochemistry. The successful applicant will be engaged in in full-time research and scholarship based at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), and will join a research team working on collecting and analyzing biogeochemical data in support of ocean research conducted by JISAO and NOAA. JISAO scientists will provide guidance to enhance the professional skills and research independence of the Scholar. The Scholar will be mentored also by PMEL scientists and UW affiliate professors Drs. Gregory Johnson and Richard Feely. Specifically, the postdoctoral scholar will conduct cutting-edge research on marine biogeochemical cycling in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME) using measurements from research vessels and Argo profiling floats with biogeochemical sensors (Argo-BGC).
