AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. I am a co-lead for the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Community for Data Integration Data Management Working Group, a team dedicated to promoting data management as a critical component in the pursuit of science. I plan monthly meetings, curate our SharePoint site, and develop data management resources to support USGS science.

I am a co-lead for the Earth Science Information Partners’ Research Artifact Citation Cluster, which is investigating how to properly attribute contributions to research artifacts.

Q&A

As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president and president-elect to communicate with and engage your members to help implement AGU’s strategic plan including its mission and vision?

AGU’s mission is “to support and inspire a global community of individuals and organizations interested in advancing discovery in Earth and space sciences and its benefit for humanity and the environment.” Data underpin scientific discovery. The Earth and Space Science Informatics (Informatics) section focuses on building community around data challenges and solutions to ensure techniques and infrastructure are in place to create knowledge from data. As secretary for the Informatics section, I will bring eight years of experience in leading communities of practice associated with data and information science. I will work with the section president and president-elect to ensure that our communications and events support scientific discovery and innovation, are inclusive and equitable, and help us build a diverse community within the Informatics section. Not only should our community be inclusive and diverse, but we should also encourage our members to increase data equity. We need to ensure that the data we collect and the data systems that we build benefit all of humanity. To do this, we will partner with organizations whose missions support equity, inclusion, and Indigenous sovereignty in data science such as We All Count and Local Contexts. Similar to how AGU has partnered with the Earth Science Information Partners to promote FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable) data through the Data FAIR Help Desk and other Data FAIR events, we can strive to increase the presence of CARE (collective benefit, authority to control, responsible, and ethical) principles and an understanding of data equity issues within and beyond the Informatics section at AGU through online discussions and in-person events.
