Chi-Yao Hung

Earth and Planetary Surface Processes

Secretary

Bio

Assistant Professor, National Chung Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

As a Taiwanese, I can speak fluent Chinese and English in the past education and training. I can successfully connect Taiwan, China, Singapore, and other Asian countries with similar cultural backgrounds and Earth and Planetary Surface Processes (EPSP) in AGU. At the same time, Taiwan is located in an area with drastic changes in geomorphology, and the general public is severely affected by geological disasters. Based on my background, I can bring these issues to the community along with experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration from geology to civil engineering.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

I was vice chief secretary in Chinese Soil and Water Conservation Society (CSWCS) in Taiwan (2016/1 - 2018/12). During this period, I helped organize the annual meeting in Taichung, Taiwan. I also have organized workshops to host visitors from around the world to visit and learn about the geology and hazards unique to Taiwan.

Q&A

As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president and president-elect to communicate with and engage your members to help implement AGU’s strategic plan including its mission and vision?

To achieve the goal of diversity, I believe involving more researchers in Asian countries is essential. I will work with leadership, put together the important information in the section newsletter and share it with the communities. I will also cooperate with other EPSP volunteers working on social media (Twitter, AGU comments, etc.) to get more researchers in Taiwan to share their research results and make the researchers in Taiwan feel more involved in EPSP in AGU. I am looking forward to expanding my volunteer experience in EPSP.
