2022 AGU ELECTIONS

Steven Constable

Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism and Electromagnetism

President-Elect

Bio

Distinguished Professor, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, CA, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I have lived in three countries (U.K., Australia, USA) and have had active collaborations that involve field campaigns in many others (India, Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, Oman), and so I would say that my international perspective is fairly well developed.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

AGU: Secretary, Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism and Electromagnetism (GPE) section, 2000/01. Eos corresponding editor, 2003/06. GPE Fellows Committee, 2017/18 and 2021/22. College of Fellows Steering Team, 2017/20. Chair, AGU College of Fellows Subcommittee on Distinguished Traveling Lecture Series, 2017/20. Other: Trustee, G.W. Hohmann Memorial Trust, 2016-present. Industry Liaison, International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) Division VI, 2016-present. Marelec standing committee, 2016-present. Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Distinguished Lecturer Committee, 2016/20. Scientific Advisory Board, Center for Geophysical Forecasting, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), 2021-present.

Q&A

This leadership position is a liaison role; it is one that aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. How will you engage with members of your section to advance AGU’s strategic plan? How will you facilitate engagement with other sections and people outside AGU to support our mission?

I consider myself to be in a good position to engage with and represent all members of the GPE section, having obtained my Ph.D. in a paleomagnetic laboratory, worked in geomagnetism as well as electromagnetism, and attended a couple of Institute for Rock Magnetism (IRM) workshops. My work has overlapped with many other sections such as Seismology, Ocean Sciences, Mineral and Rock Physics, Near-Surface Geophysics, and Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior. I have worked closely with industry, and understand the processes involved in moving academic science into society. I am active in SEG and member of the European Association of Geophysicists and Engineers (EAGE) and the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), and will promote stronger relationships with these societies. As a successful, established scientist, my primary goal for the remainder of my career is to support the next generation, and GPE and AGU offer many opportunities to do that, such as providing funds to attend meetings, mentoring networks, and promoting early career awards (something currently under discussion in GPE). I have always supported gender equity in science, and will actively promote this in governance and awards. I support open science and open data, and was part of senate leadership when my university negotiated with Elsevier over two years to obtain a lower barrier to open access publishing. Finally, as someone who teaches professional ethics at the graduate level, I have some understanding of why people transgress and what sort of mechanisms can be put in place to mitigate it, and will contribute this to AGU governance.
