2022 AGU ELECTIONS

Jennifer Stowell

Geohealth

Secretary

Bio

Postdoctoral Associate in Climate and Health, Boston University School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I am a first-generation college and graduate student from a working-class family. Growing up below the poverty line has given me a unique perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and some of the groups that, perhaps, receive less attention in DEI activities at institutions across the globe.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

Prior volunteer experiences:

  1. AGU Meetings Co-Chair since 2018 (Fall Meeting planning committee, quarterly webinars)
  2. Boston University School of Public Health DEI Committee member since 2021
  3. Secretary and Treasurer -- high school booster club
  4. Secretary and Treasurer -- parent and teacher's association (PTA)

Q&A

As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president and president-elect to communicate with and engage your members to help implement AGU’s strategic plan including its mission and vision?

As an elected leader of GeoHealth, I am committed to working closely with other section leaders to improve the engagement of our community in activities that follow the AGU strategic plan. I am specifically interested in increasing diversity in the GeoHealth community, and I strongly believe this can be done by targeting some of the other AGU initiatives like education, outreach, and collaboration. I will dedicate my time as secretary to encourage and support current activities (early career, quarterly webinars, communications & outreach, etc.) and work collaboratively to identify additional activities to foster current voices and attract voices from underrepresented groups or groups that are currently absent in our ranks.
