2022 AGU ELECTIONS

Jonathan H. Jiang

Global Environmental Change

President-Elect

Bio

Group Supervisor, Principal Scientist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, La Canada, CA, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I am a man, I support diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). As a first-generation immigrant, I have grown to understand how hidden barriers can drive social inequity. My experiences are incomplete, but I am enthusiastic to learn and ensure that I contribute to reducing barriers, to help promoting DEI and to ensure that we support a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment at AGU.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

I served as the program chair (member) for AGU Atmospheric Sciences Committee in 2011 (2016); as the Editor-in-Chief for Earth and Space Science (ESS) Open Archive since 2020; as an Editor for ESS since 2015.

Q&A

This leadership position is a liaison role; it is one that aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. How will you engage with members of your section to advance AGU’s strategic plan? How will you facilitate engagement with other sections and people outside AGU to support our mission?

Global Environmental Change (GEC) section will lead the implementation of the AGU’s 2020 strategic plan, which reflects our core values of integrity, respect, diversity, collaboration and education and outreach. If elected as the president-elect, I’ll work with the President and the members of the GEC section to advance discovery and solution-based science, build inclusive culture and broaden partnerships for the section and the AGU community at large. Especially, I will help to strengthen the partnership and collaborations between scientific research and application communities through effective use of social media, webinars, joint special sessions at Fall Meetings, as well as workshops and conferences. We will provide career development and leadership training opportunities for early career young scientists through mentorship programs and increase participation of early career scientists and underrepresented minorities in the section events. I am also passionate about outreach out to the underserved communities for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education to enhance equitable work force, and promoting diversity and inclusion is a key to our future success of the AGU.
