Jennifer M. Comstock

Atmospheric Sciences

Secretary Physics, Dynamics and Climate

Bio

Earth Scientist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I have actively participated in ground and aircraft-based field work and scientific research in the government sector for over 20 years. Since 2018, I have served in the non-traditional role as a manager for a large, distributed atmospheric measurements program where my duties include developing measurement strategies and overseeing science product development for a broad range of atmospheric measurements including aerosols, clouds, precipitation, and radiation. Through this role, I interface with scientists from around the world, software developers, data scientists, and field operations scientists and engineers. This experience has helped develop a unique and broad perspective on the challenges in performing scientific research, where I strive to develop stronger ties between the modeling and observational communities. I also engage in various outreach activities in the Mid-Columbia region of Washington to promote science careers and young women in science, and have mentored postdoctoral scientists, and undergraduate and graduate students through the Work-Based Learning Program.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

AGU Fall Meeting Organizing Committee, Atmospheric Sciences Section (2018-present), Chair in 2020 and 2021. Atmospheric System Research (ASR) Vertical Velocity Focus Group Lead (2012-2015). American Meteorological Society (AMS) Committee on Laser Atmospheric Studies (2005-2011). Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Lidar Focus Group Lead (2008-2009). Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Science Ambassador - Science educational outreach.

Q&A

As one of the elected leaders of your section, how will you partner with your president and president-elect to communicate with and engage your members to help implement AGU’s strategic plan including its mission and vision?

The section secretary role is to provide input to the executive committee (EC) on current topics within AGU and the scientific community, and support the AGU Fall Meeting organizers. I will bring to the committee my 5 years’ experience on the Fall Meeting planning committee and ongoing engagement with a broad cross-section of the atmospheric science community throughout my career. I will work to foster an atmosphere of respect and integrity within the committee and the community and promote a collaborative approach between the EC and AGU community to provide opportunities for participation and input from a diverse cross-section of the community. This will be accomplished through outreach to students, early career, and scientists with diverse backgrounds and career paths, and partnering with cross-disciplinary scientists and organizations to help advance scientific discovery and innovation.
