2022 AGU ELECTIONS

Sonja Behnke

Atmospheric and Space Electricity

President-Elect

Bio

Scientist, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM, USA

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I bring the perspective of a woman in science in a male-dominated field.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

I have served as Secretary for the Atmospheric and Space Electricity (ASE) section since 2019 (two terms). In my first term I coordinated the Outstanding Student Presentation Awards (OSPA) for ASE; during my second term I have been the lead representative for ASE on the AGU Fall Meeting Planning Committee. I am a member of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science (IAMAS) Early Career Scientist Committee, representing the International Commission on Atmospheric Electricity (ICAE).

Q&A

This leadership position is a liaison role; it is one that aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. How will you engage with members of your section to advance AGU’s strategic plan? How will you facilitate engagement with other sections and people outside AGU to support our mission?

Community building and collaboration within and outside our section has been and will continue to be a key priority of mine. I will work to facilitate collaborations between ASE and other sections through development of collaborative sessions at the Fall Meeting; the relationship between lightning and climate is particularly relevant. In addition, AGU's goal to promote an inclusive scientific culture is particularly important to me. Increasing the diversity of voices and minds in any organization leads to stronger outcomes. I would like to examine how we, as a section, can increase diversity in our talent pool, and to learn from other sections how to promote equitable practices in our organization.
