DO: Follow the Formatting Requirements
- Title: Keep it clear, concise, and under 300 characters. Make it descriptive enough to stand on its own.
- Abstract Text: Stick to the 2,000-character limit (excluding spaces, including punctuation). Focus on what you did, what you found, and why it matters. Avoid vague statements or overloading it with background info.
- Image (optional): If you upload one, make sure it’s high-resolution and directly supports your abstract—no filler graphics.
- Plain Language Summary (optional): It’s a great way to make your science accessible and shareable beyond your field. Consider including one for wider visibility.
DON’T: Wait Until the Last Minute
The submission deadline is Wednesday, 30 July 2025 at 23:59 EDT (03:59 UTC +1). Technical issues, payment processing problems, or last-minute edits can derail your submission if you’re racing the clock. Start early and give yourself and any required contributors time to review.
DO: Craft a Strong, Focused Abstract
Your English language abstract should clearly communicate your research question, approach, results and significance. Avoid jargon and write with clarity. Think of this as a mini paper—your goal is to convey what’s already been done, not what you plan to do next.
DON’T: Overload with Acronyms and Technical Language
Remember that reviewers and attendees may not share your specialty. Unexplained acronyms and dense field-specific language can make your abstract hard to understand—and easier to overlook.
DO: Know the Submission Limits and Policies
- You may submit up to two contributed abstracts as first author. They must be submitted to different sections.
- Up to three invited abstracts are allowed, as long as one is to a different section.
- The first author must be an AGU member or member of an affiliated partner organization. If you're not an AGU member or you're a non-geoscientist, request a waiver by 16 July 2025.
DON’T: Assume You Can Choose Your Presentation Format
While you can indicate a preference for poster-only, oral presentations are assigned by session conveners.
DO: Prepare Your Submission Offline First
Write and revise your abstract in a separate document before pasting it into the submission portal. This avoids data loss and makes editing easier.
DON’T: Skip the Final Review Before Submitting
Double-check your spelling, affiliations, co-author information, and format before you pay the submission fee ($70 regular / $40 student, non-refundable). Errors after payment are hard to fix.
Submitting to AGU25 is more than checking boxes—it’s your chance to join a global conversation around science and solutions. A well-crafted abstract helps your work stand out, spark connections, and contribute to the meeting’s theme: “Where Science Connects Us.” Follow these dos and don’ts to make your submission count.
