Who Are Conveners?
Session conveners are the scientists who proposed and manage the sessions at AGU25. They are subject-matter experts who take on the responsibility of reviewing abstracts, shaping their session’s schedule, and ensuring alignment with AGU’s theme of “Where Science Connects Us.”
What Conveners Do
- Review Abstracts: Conveners carefully read each submission to their session and assess its relevance, scientific quality, and clarity
- Assign Presentation Formats: They determine whether an accepted abstract will be presented as a poster, oral presentation, or alternate format (as allocated by the program committee). Some sessions will only include posters. Authors cannot request oral presentations, and conveners cannot guarantee them
- Build the Session: Conveners create the schedule, group related abstracts, and design a cohesive session experience for attendees
- Communicate with Authors: In some cases, conveners may reach out to clarify information or confirm participation
The Selection Process
AGU provides conveners with detailed guidelines to ensure the selection process is transparent, fair and inclusive. While conveners have discretion, they must:
- Follow AGU’s Code of Conduct
- Avoid conflicts of interest
- Work within session format constraints (e.g., presentation time limits and available slots)
Invited Authors and Conveners
Conveners, excluding Union session conveners, can invite up to two authors to submit abstracts to their session. Invited authors must follow the same submission and fee requirements as all other authors. If you’ve been invited, you’ll receive a special link from the convener.
Understanding the role of conveners can help you better navigate the abstract process and appreciate the thoughtful work that goes into building AGU25’s rich and diverse scientific program.
