I bring an international and cross-cultural perspective shaped by my academic and professional journey across Asia, Europe, and the United States. Born in Taiwan, educated in The University of Chicago and now a faculty member in Texas of the U.S., I have worked extensively with global collaborators and institutions, including appointments and visiting positions in Poland, Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan.

My experiences span diverse scientific communities, from mineral and rocks physics to high-pressure physics and materials science, enabling me to engage effectively across disciplines, career stages, and cultural backgrounds. Through roles in global initiatives such as international research organizations and international teaching and mentoring programs, I have supported inclusive scientific exchange and capacity building.

I also bring perspectives as an immigrant scientist and educator committed to fostering equitable access, mentorship, and representation in the Earth and space sciences. I value diverse voices and aim to amplify underrepresented perspectives within AGU’s global community.

Volunteer experience that you feel relates to this position:

I have served in leadership and advisory roles across AGU and allied organizations, including Science Advisor to the Editorial Advisory Board for Eos and Guest Editor for the AGU Monograph Carbon in Earth’s Interior. I am also a member of the AGU Mineral and Rock Physics Awards Committee. My prior service includes the Deep Carbon Observatory Engagement Advisory Committee, Consortium for Materials Properties Research in Earth Sciences Facilities Committee, and as a NASA Solar System Workings proposal review panelist (Group Chief).

Section presidents and presidents-elect serve as members of the AGU Council and lead their sections. The AGU Council is a diverse forum of perspectives that meets throughout the year to provide input to the AGU Board, staff, and other parts of the organization. Three communities within the Council - committee chairs, section leaders, and students and early career scientists - serve different roles in AGU and bring unique viewpoints to ongoing discussions.

This role aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. This leadership position is a dual role: helping to advance AGU’s strategic plan as a member of Council; and leading your section. How would you support the Board, staff and other sections to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals? How will you engage with members of your section to execute AGU’s strategic plan?

I will support the AGU Board, staff, and other sections by bringing a collaborative, community-driven perspective grounded in my long-standing engagement with AGU, particularly within the Mineral and Rock Physics (MRP) and Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior (SEDI) community. My service on AGU committees—including the MRP Awards Committee, past roles on the MRP Executive Committee, and editorial contributions to Eos—has given me insight into how AGU operates across governance, publications, and recognition systems. I will work to strengthen connections among sections, promote interdisciplinary initiatives, and ensure that Council discussions reflect diverse scientific and community perspectives aligned with AGU’s strategic priorities.

Within the MRP section, I will focus on fostering an inclusive, vibrant, and globally engaged community. The MRP will promote organizing special sessions in leading scientific topics, mentoring early career scientists, and participating in international collaborations, I will prioritize opportunities for member engagement in AGU meetings, MRP membership, and publications across career stages and regions. This includes expanding recognition pathways for MRP awards, supporting student and early career participation in session organization and meetings, and promoting inclusive leadership development.

I will also emphasize transparent communication and active listening by engaging members through town halls, surveys, websites and targeted outreach to ensure their voices inform section priorities. By aligning these efforts with AGU’s strategic plan, I aim to strengthen the section’s role as a hub for scientific excellence, collaboration, career development and community impact.
