Open Science & Data
AGU sits where researchers, repositories, publishers, and funders connect. Our position lets us convene the people who steward data across borders and disciplines, and turn what they know into shared plans, published records, and everyday practice.
AGU is a trusted leader in the global science community with a long track record of advocating for and advancing data stewardship. Best practices and a commitment to open science are woven into every aspect of what we do.
Global Data Resilience
In March 2026, AGU convened more than 100 global data experts and researchers to co-design the long-term measures for a resilient and federated global data ecosystem. This community-driven initiative developed a roadmap and is now piloting elements in preparation for implementation.
“Are we building global knowledge infrastructure for the world we have, or for the world we are trying to create?”
Hilary Hanahoe, Secretary General, Research Data Alliance. Keynote, AGU Global Data Resilience convening, Berlin, 23 March 2026. Read the keynote
Eleven task groups turned what was envisioned in Berlin into project plans, now combined into one roadmap with pilots testing it in practice.
This five-day convening created the foundation for AGU’s global data resilience work. Read about it here.
Impactful Datasets Special Collection
A new special collection hosted by AGU’s journal Earth and Space Science invites author teams to submit technical papers describing the creation, curation, and data management behind impactful Earth, space, and environmental datasets. The first paper is a commentary sharing the origin of the idea, published in AGU Advances.
Nominate an Impactful Dataset
Join your colleagues in nominating a dataset that has meaning to you. Share your story through the dimensions of people, planet, and prosperity.
More than 180 authors—including the dataset nominators, Earth Science Information Partner (ESIP) community members, AGU journal editors-in-chief, and data enthusiasts from around the world—introduce the impactful dataset collection.
Browse the nominated datasets by discipline and by criterion, and read why each one was put forward.
