The GPE section has long served as an essential and active hub for our global community, and I am committed to (1) strengthening the common ties that unite our diverse interests in magnetism and electromagnetism and (2) growing our section’s membership.

My service at the Institute for Rock Magnetism has given me a unique perspective on the breadth and creativity of the GPE community. It has been the honor of my career to work with so many early career researchers and to see the many ways our colleagues use magnetic methods to explore the natural world. I have also helped develop data-processing tools and contributed to collaborative digital infrastructure, including the Magnetics Information Consortium (MagIC) database, which provide important foundations for the future of our field.

I deeply value the international connections that are central to our section’s strength and to our ability to mentor a global cohort of early career scientists. I want to ensure that GPE remains a welcoming and supportive professional home for researchers of all backgrounds and career levels. By fostering social responsibility and intellectual humility, I will work to keep GPE a vibrant, inclusive, and influential voice within AGU.

Volunteer experience that you feel relates to this position:

For more than two decades, I have been fortunate to contribute to AGU and the Geomagnetism, Paleomagnetism, and Electromagnetism (GPE) community through conference organization, editorial service, and support of shared research facilities. I have attended every AGU meeting since 2003, convened 16 sessions, and served as editor of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems and Reviews of Geophysics. At the Institute for Rock Magnetism, I have worked with many colleagues to expand access to facilities, data, and collaborations that support our community.

Section presidents and presidents-elect serve as members of the AGU Council and lead their sections. The AGU Council is a diverse forum of perspectives that meets throughout the year to provide input to the AGU Board, staff, and other parts of the organization. Three communities within the Council - committee chairs, section leaders, and students and early career scientists - serve different roles in AGU and bring unique viewpoints to ongoing discussions.

This role aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. This leadership position is a dual role: helping to advance AGU’s strategic plan as a member of Council; and leading your section. How would you support the Board, staff and other sections to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals? How will you engage with members of your section to execute AGU’s strategic plan?

As president of the GPE section, I would work with AGU Council, the Board, staff, and leaders across sections to advance AGU’s mission of promoting discovery and solutions in Earth and space science. The GPE section has played a central role in my own professional development, and I welcome the opportunity to give back to the community that has provided me with mentorship, collaboration, and enduring scientific friendships.

GPE’s interdisciplinary nature connects geophysics, environmental science, planetary science, and materials research, positioning our section to contribute to AGU initiatives involving scientific integrity, open science, education, and societal impact. Drawing on my experience developing community resources such as the Institute for Rock Magnetism and the MagIC database, I would advocate for investments in shared infrastructure, data accessibility, and international collaboration that strengthen the scientific enterprise. My service as an editor for AGU journals, including Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems and Reviews of Geophysics, has reinforced for me the importance of FAIR publishing standards that make scientific results findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

Within GPE, I would engage members through open communication, active listening, and meaningful opportunities for participation. I am especially committed to supporting students and early career scientists by expanding access to research opportunities, mentoring, and leadership roles. I would work to ensure that GPE remains a welcoming community for researchers of all backgrounds and career stages. By fostering intellectual humility, social responsibility, and global connectivity, I would help our section implement AGU’s strategic plan while sustaining the innovative spirit that defines our community.
