AGU embraces the global community and welcomes leaders representing various identities, voices and perspectives. I have worked in nonlinear physics, mainly on turbulence theories and their modeling applicable to real-world phenomena in geophysics, space physics, fluid physics, astrophysics, fusion plasma sciences as well as engineering fields. One of the prominent and unique characteristics of nonlinear geophysics studies lies in the point that they have trans-disciplinary and inclusive properties. With my experience in various scientific activities, I am quite sure that, today, current and innovative methodologies and fundamental sciences being developed in the nonlinear geophysics community are becoming more and more important in addressing unsolved issues associated with urgent crises of the modern world. I would like to promote opportunities for colleagues with the expertise to initiate projects for developing new methodologies in nonlinear geophysics and to encourage their applications to the scientific and social issues of the contemporary world.

Volunteer experience that you feel relates to this position:

Since I joined AGU (2007), I organized numerous sessions at the Fall Meetings while serving as chair. I have served as member of the Executive Committee of Nonlinear Geophysics, and also as selection committee member of AGU’s Space Weather and Nonlinear Waves and Processes Prize (2017-18) and the Turcotte Award (2024-26). I have been co-organizer of several international conferences, editor of AGU book and reviewer of many journals and book proposals.

Q&A

Section presidents and presidents-elect serve as members of the AGU Council and lead their sections. The AGU Council is a diverse forum of perspectives that meets throughout the year to provide input to the AGU Board, staff, and other parts of the organization. Three communities within the Council - committee chairs, section leaders, and students and early career scientists - serve different roles in AGU and bring unique viewpoints to ongoing discussions.

This role aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. This leadership position is a dual role: helping to advance AGU’s strategic plan as a member of Council; and leading your section. How would you support the Board, staff and other sections to achieve AGU’s vision, values, mission, and goals? How will you engage with members of your section to execute AGU’s strategic plan?

The role of AGU is crucial in developing fundamental multifaceted research and understanding of our planet to preserve life with beneficial projects to act in the interests of humanity in overcoming dramatic health, climate, and social crises the world is facing today.

As President of Nonlinear Geophysics (NG) section, I will devote my efforts to make people within AGU and outside recognize that contributing to its new institutional mission is of crucial importance towards solving underlying critical issues of the world. The way I intend to pursue this goal is by enhancing the inter-disciplinary and comprehensive character of NG, forming an environment where AGU members of diverse backgrounds can increase the impact of their scientific and social activities and find more opportunities to initiate new projects concerning nonlinear systems. - Getting junior fellows involved in NG activities; - Fostering diversity and scientific culture at all levels; - Creating opportunities for encouraging colleagues with expertise to innovate new methodologies and fundamental sciences in geo-complexity; - Enhancing the attractiveness of NG to AGU members across Earth and space science domains. These are points I will pursue together with the executive committee and NG members to develop AGU’s new strategic plan and support sound growth of NG. On the basis of my experience of working in various communities in geophysics, space physics, mathematics, physics, astrophysics, fusion sciences, and engineering, I will engage people from other AGU sections and from scientific communities outside AGU to best support the union and section missions.
