AGU26 Abstract Requirements: Word Counts, Images and More
Planning to submit an abstract to AGU26? Here’s everything you need to know to meet the submission guidelines and avoid last-minute surprises.

Key Dates and Deadlines

  • Abstract submission opens: Mid-June 2026
  • Submission deadline: Wednesday, 5 August 2026 (23:59 EDT / 03:59 UTC)
  • Membership waiver request deadline (for non-members): 22 July 2026

What Your Abstract Must Include

When preparing your English language abstract, ensure you have the following components ready:

  • Title: Up to 300 characters Abstract text: Up to 2,000 characters (excluding spaces, but including punctuation)
  • Optional image: A single JPG or PNG image can help illustrate your key point
  • Plain-language summary (optional): A great way to communicate your work to a broader or non-specialist audience Author information: List all co-authors with accurate affiliations and emails; it should be the same email your co-authors use for their AGU member account
  • Presentation format preference: You may request to be considered for poster only. Authors cannot request oral presentations—these decisions are made by session conveners
  • Participation mode: Indicate whether you’ll attend in-person in San Francisco or participate online only

Abstract Submission Fees

  • Regular submission: $80 (non-refundable)
  • Student submission: $45 (non-refundable)
  • No fee for individuals residing in World Bank–designated low- and lower-middle income countries

Who Can Submit?

  • The first author must be a current AGU member or a member of an affiliated organization.
  • If you're not an AGU member but belong to an affiliated society or you're a non-geoscientist, you can request a membership waiver by 22 July 2026.
  • The submitter is automatically listed as the first author and may also be the presenting author.

Presentation Formats

Oral presentations:

  • May include both in-person and online presentations; online presenters must upload a pre-recorded talk.

Poster presentations:

  • In-person posters will be presented in San Francisco and may also be displayed online.
  • Online posters are presented asynchronously with discussion via iPoster tools and scheduled chats.

Submission Limits

  • Contributed abstracts: Up to two per first author, as long as they are submitted to different sections.
  • Invited abstracts: Up to three, as long as one is submitted to a session led by a different section.

Making Changes Before the Deadline

You can return to the AGU User Portal to edit your abstract any time before the deadline. Final submission requires payment of the applicable fee.
