Daniel Izuikedinachi Okoh

Dr. Daniel Okoh is a Research Scientist at NASRDA. He has a First Class BSc in Physics & Astronomy - UNN, a Distinction MSc in Space Physics - RU, and a Distinction PhD in Astrophysics - UNN. Dr. Okoh’s research interests are in applications of AI & ML for Space Weather modelling. He is the principal developer of the AfriTEC model. He is a member of the WMO Expert Team on Space Weather, and a SCOSTEP Science Discipline Representative. He presently works as postdoc on the INGV NORISK project.

Citation
Daniel Okoh finished a B.Sc. (physics and astronomy) in 2006 at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria. Thereafter, he continued to complete a B.Sc. Honors in astrophysics and space science at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2008. Daniel proceeded to complete a M.Sc. (physics) and a Ph.D. (physics and astronomy) in 2009 and 2014 at Rhodes University, South Africa, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria, respectively. Daniel is currently a research scientist at the National Space Research and Development Agency, Nigeria, and a research fellow with the New Observatory for Real-time Ionospheric Sounding over Kenya, a project spearheaded by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Rome, Italy. Daniel’s research mainly focuses on the development of ionospheric models using different datasets, including characterization over the African region with little ground-based infrastructure.

One of the special attributes of Daniel’s research is his contribution to the development of ionospheric models which serve as platforms for monitoring and predicting variations in ionospheric parameters due to changes in space weather. One of these is the African total electron content (AfriTEC) model which is used in regional African TEC modeling and is relevant for both quiet and disturbed conditions. He has also contributed immensely to the development of the three-dimensional electron density reconstruction model that is currently being used as a product in an operational space weather environment.

As a contributor to scholarly literature and training, Daniel has authored a few textbooks on Matlab programming which have found significant usage among the postgraduate student community both regionally and globally. One of these is Matlab Programming: Introduction, Scripting & File Processing, 2-D Graphs, Digital Color Imaging, Computer Neural Networks, published in 2018. Daniel readily shares copies of his books and knowledge with colleagues and postgraduate students, including making source codes available in a user-friendly format such as development of graphical user interfaces for some research applications and models.

Daniel is a sought-after lecturer in capacity-building efforts all over the African continent and at international institutions and regularly acts as a mentor for postgraduate students as well as emerging researchers in space physics research. He hosts international students and researchers as part of international and professional initiatives in capacity building at his institution. He is a passionate scientist who enjoys interacting with students and has contributed significantly to training postgraduate students at both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels both within and outside the African continent.

I am truly honored to receive the AGU Africa Award for Research Excellence in Space Science. This recognition marks a milestone in my research journey, which has been made possible through the support and encouragement of many esteemed institutions and individuals. I extend my sincerest gratitude to AGU for this honor and to Professor John Bosco Habarulema, whose nomination and kind citation have highlighted the goals and impacts of my work in ionospheric modeling.My work has focused on the development of ionospheric models that address critical space weather challenges over the African region. Models such as the African Total Electron Content (AfriTEC) and a three-dimensional electron density reconstruction model have become central tools in regional ionospheric monitoring, contributing to both scientific knowledge and practical applications in navigation and communications. These advancements would not have been possible without the support of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), where I serve as a research scientist. I would like to express my profound gratitude to Professor Babatunde Rabiu, my director and mentor at NASRDA. His leadership and guidance have played a vital role in shaping my career. I am also indebted to the late Professor Lee-Anne McKinnell, whose mentorship during my early years in ionospheric research introduced me to the vast potential of this field. Her legacy and dedication to advancing space science in Africa continue to inspire me. Additionally, I recognize the contributions of various international and African institutions that have supported my work and encouraged collaborations across borders. An important acknowledgment also goes to the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, specifically the New Observatory for Real-time Ionospheric Sounding over Kenya (NORISK) project, headed by Dr. Claudio Cesaroni, which provided invaluable support for my work. It has been immensely rewarding to share knowledge and resources, such as my MATLAB programming textbooks, with the next generation of scientists through these networks. These contributions have aimed to foster capacity-building initiatives throughout Africa, inspiring and equipping students and early-career researchers to contribute to the global space science community.Once again, I am grateful to AGU and to all the institutions, mentors, colleagues and students who have supported and inspired this journey.
