Invited Author Policy

Invited Author Policy

The session convener will send you an email from the abstract management platform to ask if you will serve as an invited author. Within the invitation, you will find the link to initiate your invited abstract submission.

You must submit your abstract via the link included in the invitation.

  1. If the abstract is not submitted through the formal invitation, the abstract will not have an invited status listing.
  2. If you submitted your abstract to the session as a contributed abstract in error, do not withdraw your abstract.

Conveners should invite authors by 21 July 2021 so that they have enough time to accept the invite, prepare and submit the abstract. Conveners will have access to the invitation tool until the abstract submission deadline of 4 August. AGU strongly encourages conveners to issue invitations as soon as possible.

Requirements:

  • 1

Invited authors must be an AGU member or a member of a current affiliated society/organization. As long as the invited author is a member, the coauthor/s or presenting author/s do not need to be an AGU member or a member of a current affiliated society/organization.

    a. If you have a question on your membership status, need to join or renew, or need assistance with your AGU membership account, contact the AGU Membership Services Team by email or call 800.966.2481 (toll-free in North America) or +1 202.462.6900.

    b. If you pay for your AGU membership by credit card, you will have immediate access to the abstract submission site.

  • 2

Under certain circumstances, special membership exemptions may be requested for invited authors who are non-geoscientists. Please note that the deadline to make these requests has now passed.

  • 3
Invited authors must pay all fees associated with attending the meeting, including membership fees, abstract submission fees and online or in-person meeting registration.
  • 4
Invited authors cannot submit an invited abstract to more than two sessions. They can submit 1 invited abstract to any session + 1 invited abstract to a different session from the first invited abstract. Invited authors can also submit one contributed abstract, if this is submitted to a different section from their invited abstract(s).
  • 5
A convener cannot be the first author on an invited abstract submitted to a session that they are convening.
#AGU21 Invited Author Abstract Requirements

Reminder: Invited authors are not guaranteed an oral presentation and may be assigned a poster presentation. All invited authors are subject to being scheduled either in an oral, eLightning or a poster discussion session at the discretion of the Fall Meeting Program Committee. If a session is allocated an oral discussion session in August, which is also not guaranteed, the convener decides the authors who will be in in that session and the length of presentations during the scheduling process.

The final decisions about presentation type and session format are made by the Fall Meeting Program Committee.

Conveners Submitting Abstracts

Session conveners may not be the first author or presenting author on an invited abstract in the session they are convening. Conveners can be invited authors in other sessions, but not in their own sessions.

Conveners may submit a contributed abstract to a session they are convening; however, they must be scheduled as an eLightning or poster presentation. Student and early career conveners are exempt from this rule and may be scheduled for an oral presentation in their own session.

The recommended deadline for conveners to invite authors is 21 July 2021 so that authors have enough time to accept the invite, prepare and submit the abstract. Conveners will have access to the invitation tool until the abstract submission deadline, but we strongly encourage them to issue invitations as soon as possible.

Reminder: Conveners who submit abstracts must pay all fees associated with attending the meeting, including membership fees, abstract submission fees and online or in-person meeting registration (if serving as the presenting author). Conveners who serve as session chairs must pay the online or in-person meeting registration fee to attend. Conveners who are not attending the meeting do not need to pay the meeting registration fee.
