AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

I identify as Asian-American, born in Taiwan, but raised in the United States. I thus identify as a person of color, immigrant, and American.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

Within the AGU ecosystem, I have served as Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology (VGP) secretary, editor of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, associate editor Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, and chair of the Kuno Award Committee in VGP. I served 5 years as chair of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Rice University. I am a member of the board of directors for the Geochemical Society. I also serve on the board of various nature conservation and education non-profits.

Q&A

This leadership position is a liaison role; it is one that aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. How will you engage with members of your section to advance AGU’s strategic plan? How will you facilitate engagement with other sections and people outside AGU to support our mission?

I will strive to build a sense of community in the form of shared scientific interests and encouraging collaboration and mentorship among the members. My research interests are broad, so I also hope to facilitate interactions with other sections in AGU as well as other professional societies. I believe strongly in outreach and communication to the public through traditional media (newsletters, webpages, etc.) as well as through social media platforms. I believe in using VGP to promote and recognize excellence within AGU. I am also committed to enhancing diversity in our community. Finally, I will broaden the types of employment opportunities for VGP members, from jobs in academia to jobs in industry, policy, outreach, science communication and beyond, by cultivating partnerships with academic and non-academic entities.
