Education

President-Elect

Bio

Assistant Professor, Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Department, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

AGU embraces the global community and welcomes diverse leaders from around the world, representing various identities, voices, and perspectives. List any identities, voices, and perspectives you would bring, including but not limited to nationality, regional representations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and any other identity you feel comfortable sharing.

As an instructor who has taught across academic levels from high school, community college, and university, I bring experience and practical understanding of teaching and learning practices across educational pathways. As a geoscience education researcher, I bring experience and insights into how teaching and learning practice connects to theory and vice versa. As a recent immigrant settler and uninvited guest on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, I bring the perspective of a learner. As project lead on the collaborative Earth Science Experiential and Indigenous Learning (EaSEIL) project at the University of British Columbia, I bring the voice of a connector, bringing people together to advance inclusive teaching practices in the geosciences.

Volunteer experience that relates to this position:

Selected experiences: Founding President, National Association of Geoscience Teachers Geoscience Education Research Division, 2014-2015; Special Interest Group Chair, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, POD Network, 2021-2022; Chair and member, Geoscience Education Committee, Geological Society of America, 2013-2016; Co-Convener on four geoscience education related sessions at AGU conferences, 2018 (2), 2020, 2021

Q&A

This leadership position is a liaison role; it is one that aims to catalyze community and build AGU as envisioned by the strategic plan. How will you engage with members of your section to advance AGU’s strategic plan? How will you facilitate engagement with other sections and people outside AGU to support our mission?

Engage with members of your section to advance AGU's strategic plan: A key way I will engage members is by drawing section and other sections' member attention to Education-related sessions at the annual conference by posting in the AGU webspaces and will continue the tradition of the section convening a science education research session. I will actively contribute to the current geoscience education research working group initiatives, one of which includes offering virtual community events outside of the annual conference. By offering it virtually, it increases member access to engagement, particularly for members from community colleges, K-12, and informal education settings.

Facilitate engagement with other sections and people outside AGU to support mission: A key strategy is transparency and communication, sharing with others what our section is up to and learning/keeping up with what other sections and organizations are doing. As the Founding and Past President of the Geoscience Education Research Division of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT), I continue to be active and engaged in a variety of geoscience education spaces and initiatives and will serve as an unofficial liaison, sharing initiative updates, pointing out overlaps in mission/strategic goals and opportunities for collaboration between groups like NAGT, the Geological Society of America (GSA), the American Meteorological Society (AMS),  the X-DBER Conference, the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), the Canadian Association of Science Centres (CASC), etc.
