About the Austin Challenge

Scientist and AGU Development Board member Jamie Austin has issued a challenge to the Earth and space science community. He will match all donations to the Austin Endowment for Student Travel up to the amount of $1 million. With your support and his generous donation, we have the opportunity to create a fund of $2 million to support students attending AGU Fall Meetings. We can rise up to meet this challenge and support the next generation of Earth and space scientists, but we need your help.

Support the Austin Student Travel Endowment by making a donation in any amount. With Jamie Austin’s matching gift, your donation will have double the impact, going even further to support important student experiences at Fall Meeting.

Rise to the Challenge

Join the AGU community in supporting the next generation of Earth and space scientists. Thanks to the Austin Challenge, it’s easy to make a big impact towards the Student Travel Grant program. Making a financial contribution towards the Austin Endowment is best way to show your investment in future of Earth and space science, but there are plenty of other ways to be a part of this historic effort.

The impacts of your gift

Student travel grants are an investment in the future of the Earth and space sciences by helping to defray the costs of presenting for undergraduate and graduate students from around the world.

Attending an AGU meeting as a student can be a transformational experience that builds confidence, grows perspective, and forges a new network of scientific peers. Unfortunately, the need for travel grant support exceeds the number of available grants, with applications having grown to approximately 1,000 each year. Grants are awarded to students across all AGU sections, and preference is given to students from underrepresented demographic groups.

AGU is currently able to support 220 student travel grants each year. With the help of the Austin Student Travel Grant Challenge, we will nearly double the number of Fall Meeting travel grants awarded to students.
