Information on the Open Science Recognition Prize
The Open Science Recognition Prize is awarded to a person or team for outstanding work in advancing Open Science related to Earth and space science and its impact globally. The winners will be chosen from nominations across the Earth and space science community.
Applications will be selected from those that advance Open Science through creation or use of open data, software, and other open results.
Open Science is well described in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science as, “an inclusive construct that combines various movements and practices aiming to make multilingual scientific knowledge openly available, accessible and reusable for everyone, to increase scientific collaborations and sharing of information for the benefits of science and society, and to open the processes of scientific knowledge creation, evaluation and communication to societal actors beyond the traditional scientific community.”
Award Benefits
- Up to three awards will be given annually in the form of payment of speaker fees. The speaker fee should be used by individual winners or split evenly amongst teams to advance further Open Science work.
- Winners will be recognized as part of the related plenary session at the AGU Fall Meeting and will be invited to the President’s reception. Speaker fees will cover participation and recognition in a plenary.
- All winners will also be asked to present their work at the Fall Meeting and will be included during the annual Honors Tribute activities.
Nominations + Eligibility
Nominees must meet the eligibility requirements detailed below. Please review the eligibility requirements carefully prior to submitting a nomination. Ineligible nominations will be returned to nominators without review.
Nominations must be submitted through the online submission platform by 12 April 2023 at 11:59 PM, ET. Nominations submitted after the deadline or outside of the online submission platform will not be accepted. Please contact [email protected] if you are in need of other submission accommodations.
Nomination Letter
REQUIRED* The nomination letter should be written on letterhead and include the nominator’s name, title, institution, and contact information. The nomination letter should not exceed 2 pages in length. AGU will remove any pages in excess of the limit (2 pages) prior to sharing with the review committee.
The letter should include a description of the project or results (maximum of 1500 words), explaining how it has fostered and advanced Open Science and provided broad community and public benefits and expanded diversity, equity, and inclusivity as per the Selection Criteria.

Nomination and Submission Requirements
- Nominations must be submitted through AGU's online nomination and review platform, Open Water. If other accommodations are needed, contact [email protected]
- Each required document (nomination letter and (3) letters of support) should not exceed 2-pages in length. Pages in excess of the limit will be removed prior to being shared with the review committee.
- Please submit all required documents as unencrypted, watermark-free PDF's.
- Please use an appropriate font size/type (e.g., Times New Roman, size 12). If the selected font is difficult to read, you will be asked to revise the document.
- Only complete packages will be forwarded to the Selection Committee for review. Late/incomplete submissions will not be accepted.
Nominee eligibility
Nominations for this recognition will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Eligible work can include projects, datasets, data products, software, workflow tools, computational notebooks, publications, public communication and other results /activities that promote and advance Open Science broadly.
- Open Science work that contributes to the broader impact of research and demonstrates a comprehensive Open Science practice.
- Open Science stories and results that provide or include significant public and community benefits and/or increase and address diversity and equity are particularly encouraged.
- Projects can be discipline-based or multidisciplinary; projects and results should feature Open Science related to the Earth and space sciences.
Nominations are open to individuals and teams; self-nominations are welcome. Nominees must be in compliance with our Honors Conflict of Interest Policy. Selected nominees will need to sign a self-disclosure form.
