Honors and Recognition Committee

Committee charge

The Honors and Recognition Committee maintains oversight of AGU’s honors and recognition programs at all levels – Union medals, awards and prizes, Fellows, and Section honors. The committee conducts a periodic review of the programs to ensure alignment with AGU’s values, strategic plan, and to promote and exemplify an inclusive scientific culture.

Key Duties of the H&R Committee

  1. Develop policies and procedures consistent with AGU’s values and strategic goals that enhance the effectiveness of the honors and recognition programs at all levels.
  2. Review proposals for new recognitions and modifications to existing honors and establish new honors to enhance and support AGU’s values and strategic plan.
  3. Establish guidelines to ensure equitable and transparent practices around engagement in the honors program and the reviewal process of nominees.
  4. Examine and report on program data to determine whether the number and quality of AGU honors nominees is competitive.
  5. Ensure that the catalogue of honors aligns with AGU’s values, strategic plan and DEI strategy.
  6. Provide guidelines and resources to Sections Honors Canvassing Committees to support their engagement with the Honors Program.
  7. Develop opportunities and platforms to promote honorees accomplishments.
  8. Partner with AGU staff, Sections, and other key partners in communicating and promoting initiatives for AGU’s honors and recognition programs.
