Information for the The Award for Advancing Inclusive Excellence in STEM

The Award for Advancing Inclusive Excellence in STEM recognizes exemplary efforts made by an individual or team for developing program/s, systems, or networks that have led to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the Earth and space sciences community. The nominees for this distinguished award are individuals or teams from all career levels that have proven success in creating and sustaining measurable change within the Earth and space science community.

Award Benefits

For individuals:

  • Monetary prize of $10,000. Funds are intended to further the honoree’s work.
  • Complimentary Fall Meeting registration.
  • Two-night Fall Meeting housing waiver.
  • Two complimentary tickets to the Honors Banquet at the AGU Fall Meeting during the award presentation year

For teams:

  • Monetary prize of $10,000. Funds are intended to further the team’s work. Teams are entrusted to use the award funds towards sustaining the team’s work, and to distribute the award funds equitably.
  • Complimentary Fall Meeting registration for two team members.
  • Two-night Fall Meeting housing waiver for two team members.
  • Two complimentary tickets for two team members to the Honors Banquet at the AGU Fall Meeting during the award presentation year

Nominations + Eligibility

Nominees must meet the eligibility requirements detailed above. Please review the eligibility requirements carefully prior to submitting a nomination. Ineligible nominations will be returned to nominators without review.

Nominations must be submitted through the online submission platform by 12 April 2023 at 11:59 PM, ET. Nominations submitted after the deadline or outside of the online submission platform will not be accepted. Please contact [email protected] if you are in need of other submission accommodations.

REQUIRED* The nomination letter should be written on letterhead and include the nominator’s name, title, institution, and contact information. The nomination letter should not exceed 2 pages in length. AGU will remove any pages in excess of the limit (2 pages) prior to sharing with the review committee.

REQUIRED* The CV must list all of the following candidate information: name, mailing and email address, employment history, degrees, relevant research experience, relevant honors, memberships, service to the community through committee work, advisory boards, etc. The CV should not exceed 2 pages in length. AGU will remove any pages in excess of the limit (2 pages) prior to sharing with the review committee.

REQUIRED* Each letter of support should be written on letterhead and include the supporter’s name, title, institution, and contact information. Each letter of support should be no more than 2 pages in length. AGU will remove any pages in excess of the limit (2 pages) prior to sharing with the review committee.

  • Nominations must be submitted through AGU's online nomination and review platform, Open Water. If other accommodations are needed, contact [email protected].
  • Each required document (nomination letter, CV, selected bibliography, and (3) letters of support) should not exceed 2-pages in length. Pages in excess of the limit will be removed prior to being shared with the review committee.
  • Please submit all required documents as unencrypted, watermark-free PDF's.
  • Please use an appropriate font size/type (e.g., Times New Roman, size 12). If the selected font is difficult to read, you will be asked to revise the document.
  • Only complete packages will be forwarded to the Selection Committee for review. Late/incomplete submissions will not be accepted.

Nominee eligibility

Nominations for an individual are reviewed based on the following criteria:

  1. Record of efforts and actions indicating they are effective and impactful change agents for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the Earth and space science Community as demonstrated by mentoring, advocacy, or development of programs, systems, or networks.
  2. Nominations should include measurable evidence of sustained successful practice(s), program(s), or initiative(s).

Nominations for a team are reviewed based on the following criteria:

  1. Record of efforts and actions for developing programs, systems, or networks that have led to the advancement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the Earth and space science Community.
  2. Nominations should include measurable evidence of sustained successful practice(s), program(s), or initiative(s).
  3. Team members should be named, and their role(s) and contribution(s) should be indicated and described in the nomination.
  4. Each nominated team member should have contributed to the overall creation, implementation, or success of the practice(s), program(s), or initiative(s) that led to the advancement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the Earth and space science  Community.

Nominations are open to an individual or team. A team can comprise of: partners in DEI advocacy at their institutions or in their communities; collaborators in creating or implementing inclusive policies, practices, or programs; co-developers of approaches that foster a just, equitable and ESS community; co-contributors to developing a diverse and inclusive workforce; co-authors on articles or manuscripts, or co-creators of pedagogical tools or programs. Team membership is not limited to AGU members or professional scientists

Nominees must be in compliance with our Honors Conflict of Interest Policy. Selected nominees will need to sign a self-disclosure form
